What is GPS tracking?

Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking is a resource used to determine the location of a person, vehicle or other asset and makes use of the system of satellites which orbit the earth. In simple terms, the tracking device emits a regular signal which is received by 3 or more orbiting satellites which in turn bounce the signal back to the tracker providing the device with a range of accurate information which is recorded within the tracker. There are two main categories of tracker; passive trackers and live trackers. Both have a role to play in surveillance and investigation.

Passive Tracker (data logger)

Passive trackers, sometimes also referred to as data loggers, are the most basic form of GPS tracker. These devices receive and record the information sent by the satellites (as described above) and store the information on an internal memory. We term them passive trackers as they are designed to provide historic information. Powered by battery, the passive tracker is capable of storing 7-9 days of information within the memory which may then be downloaded onto supporting software. The results are produced as accurate readings in the form of driving reports, which include detail such as times and duration of stops, routes driven, and speeds. The software is capable of superimposing the route information onto google maps, providing imagery of the track which is accurate to within 10m.

Live tracker (data pusher/data puller)

Live trackers are the most advanced form GPS tracking devices. They work on the same satellite signal technology as the passive tracker but rather than storing the received data in an internal memory, the signal is pushed or pulled to a central location, in our case to a specialist database where it can be easily accessed 24 hrs a day. The resultant information can be viewed and superimposed on a variety of platforms such as Google Maps, Google Earth and Virtual Earth. The signals can be tracked and viewed live, in real time, by our specialist operatives. Unlike most live trackers which put out a tracking signal once every 10-15 minutes, WIA live trackers emit their signals once every 5 seconds! The results are that the tracker plots what we affectionately call 'breadcrumbs', once every 5 seconds along the route travelled. The breadcrumbs can be interrogated in real time or historically and will each independently give an exact time, date, speed  and course reading to the observer. GPS live tracking does not get any more accurate than this.
